Despite the unexpected mishaps that occur on-and-off campus on a daily basis, colleges and universities are not responsible for damage to or theft of student property. For this reason, most institutions recommend that students and parents consider purchasing coverage like the STUDENT PERSONAL PROPERTY PLAN from Student Insurance Group. More than 1,100 college and universities across the country specifically endorse SIG - making us by far the most popular choice of insurance coverage among parents, students, and administrators. Start safeguarding your belongings today, and enjoy the peace of mind that results from knowing that your most valuable possessions are safe. Every college student can benefit, and - starting at as little as $3 a month - it's affordable even on a first-year-student budget.

Frequently Asked Questions About SIG

Consult the following list of frequently asked questions about the STUDENT PERSONAL PROPERTY PLAN available from SIG.

1. This sounds like the perfect plan for my student. How do I enroll?

Enrolling in the STUDENT PERSONAL PROPERTY PLAN from Student Insurance Group is simple and takes only a few minutes. Click here to sign up, and start protecting your college students' possessions today.

2. I'm already enrolled. Something happened, and I need to file a claim. How do I do it?

Fortunately, SIG covers almost everything a student has. In the event that a student's belongings have been stolen or damaged by theft, fire, flood or natural disasters, claims information is conveniently found on our website. Click here to find claims forms and contact information.

3. Doesn't my homeowner's policy cover essential possessions (computers, electronics, clothing, etc.)?

It depends. Not all homeowners policies are the same, and their deductibles are usually much higher. And although most policies will provide some coverage, they have limitations on certain property. Also, the limit for property away from the principal residence is generally 10% of the personal property limit on the parent's policy. Click here for a comparison of our plan against homeowners and renters insurance coverage.

4. If my homeowner's policy provides coverage, why would I want to purchase a separate policy?

The STUDENT PERSONAL PROPERTY PLAN from SIG applies first, regardless of other insurance, providing a greater percentage of reimbursement. It also covers things a homeowner's policy does not and costs significantly less than the deductible under a homeowner's policy. Because of our low deductibles, you will always recover more of a covered loss with SIG.

5. How much does SIG's plan cost?

As little as $3 a month, with deductibles as low as $25. Compare our plan's deductibles ($25, $50 or $100) to those of your homeowners policy ($500 to $1,000+). Click here for more information about our rates, deductibles, and premiums.

6. What kind of property is covered?

Computers, electronics, musical instruments, clothing, sports equipment, textbooks, furniture, linens, photography equipment, bicycles (limited to $500) and jewelry (limited to 20% of the policy amount). Click here for a detailed list of property covered under our insurance.

7. Does SIG's policy cover property if a student resides off-campus?

Yes. It covers property in apartments, hotels, residence halls, fraternity and sorority houses - and even during study abroad and property in storage.

8. If someone steals a student's property, will the STUDENT PERSONAL PROPERTY PLAN cover that loss?

Yes, unless stolen from a vehicle that was not locked.

9. If a student loses something insured by the plan, is that covered?

No. Items misplaced, lost, left behind or accidentally damaged are not covered. Items stolen by theft, burglary, or robbery are covered. A police report must be filed for these types of losses.

10. Will SIG's policy cover property a student borrows from a friend if that item is stolen?

Yes. It covers property in the care, custody, or control of the insured. Your homeowners policy may not provide this coverage.

11. What about sub-limits (special provisions) on the SIG policy?
Bicycles (limited to $500), jewelry (limited to 20% of the policy amount), and CDs, DVDs, and videogame systems (all limited to $1,000 per loss).

12. If a student travels overseas during semester breaks or between school years, is his or her property covered?

Yes, which makes our coverage truly WORLDWIDE.

13. Are there riders?

No. You don't have to fill out additional paperwork (riders) to cover special items. Plus, our policy is straightforward and easy to read, so you know what to expect if and when you file a claim.

14. What if I'm not happy with my plan?

If you are not satisfied with your coverage for any reason whatsoever, simply return your policy within 30 days for a 100% money-back guarantee with no questions asked. You may also cancel after the initial 30-day period, with a $20 minimum premium to cover administrative costs.

15. I'm a school administrator and would like to promote SIG on my campus. How do I get started?

Smart choice! You'll join more than 1,100 institutions nationwide that have participated in our plan and provided their students with our comprehensive coverage.
